MasterControl suits regulated life science firms that can fund a substantial implementation. Many cannot, or do not need that weight. The six platforms below keep serious quality capability while changing the balance of cost, complexity or industry focus. Start from the wider best QMS software comparison if your shortlist is still open, and read the MasterControl review for the baseline these options are measured against.
Why teams look beyond MasterControl
Cost is the first trigger. The vendor does not publish pricing for Quality Excellence, packaging is quote based, and third party estimates point towards enterprise budgets. ITQlick estimates a starting point of 300 dollars per user per month, while Capterra and Software Advice list a starting figure of 25,000 dollars per year. Both are labelled estimates or listing figures, not vendor prices, yet neither suggests a modest outlay.
Weight is the second trigger. Deployment spans cloud and on premise, packaging runs from Starter to Complete, and a rollout normally involves IT, validation planning and companion products for supplier or post market work. Calibration is also not evidenced for Quality Excellence itself, which surprises buyers who assumed every core module was inside the package.
The third trigger is evaluation friction. There is no free trial, so a team must commit to demonstrations and reference calls before it can judge day to day usability. Our desk research gave MasterControl 8.0 out of 10 overall, with pricing transparency at 4.6, the weakest mark in its profile.
Octave Reliance: enterprise configurability for manufacturers
Octave Reliance, formerly ETQ Reliance, targets enterprise manufacturing organisations across medical devices, electronics, aerospace, food and beverage, automotive, consumer goods and pharmaceuticals. All ten modules in our checklist are evidenced, including calibration, and the vendor states support for ISO 9001, AS9100 and FDA 21 CFR Part 11. Pricing is platform based and quote only, with no free trial, so it solves the industry narrowness of MasterControl rather than its opacity.
Choose this instead if your quality problems span several manufacturing sites and sectors, and you need a highly configurable platform more than a life science specialist. Desk research total: 7.8 out of 10. See the Octave Reliance review for the full evidence.
Veeva Vault Quality: for organisations already living in Vault
Veeva Vault Quality serves pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, CDMO and CRO enterprises, with QualityOne extending the same family into consumer goods, cosmetics and specialty chemicals. Nine modules are evidenced; calibration is not. The vendor states alignment with FDA 21 CFR Part 11, EU Annex 11 and GxP expectations. Document control and training sit inside the wider Vault suite, which is both attraction and commitment.
Choose this instead if your regulatory, safety and clinical teams already work on Veeva Vault, because one platform relationship then covers several regulated functions. Pricing is not published and no trial information was available. Desk research total: 8.0 out of 10. The Veeva Vault Quality review explains the suite boundaries in detail.
ComplianceQuest: quality inside Salesforce
ComplianceQuest builds its QMS natively on Salesforce, which changes the buying conversation for firms whose customer, service and commercial data already live there. All ten modules are evidenced, including calibration and supplier quality, and the vendor states support for ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, AS9100, IATF 16949, ISO 17025 and 21 CFR Part 11. Pricing is quote based per user and per module, with Salesforce licence costs on top, and G2 records no free trial.
Choose this instead if Salesforce is your strategic platform and you want complaints, CAPA and supplier records alongside customer data instead of in a separate silo. Desk research total: 8.2 out of 10. Read the ComplianceQuest review before assuming the Salesforce fit is free of trade offs.
Intellect: no code flexibility without enterprise ceremony
Intellect positions itself around configurability, letting quality teams reshape workflows without writing code, on cloud or on premise deployment. All ten modules are evidenced, and the vendor states support for ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 17025, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and GMP. The vendor does not publish pricing on its own site. A third party listing via G2, stated as pricing provided by Intellect, puts Core from 26,000 dollars per year for five core users up to 47,000 dollars per year for ten enterprise users, so treat those figures as listing evidence.
Choose this instead if your processes differ enough from standard templates that configurability matters more than an out of the box life science package. Desk research total: 8.1 out of 10. The Intellect review covers its validation and integration claims.
QT9 QMS: broad modules with a trial you can actually run
QT9 takes the opposite approach to evaluation: a free trial exists, all ten modules are evidenced, and licencing is per concurrent user with every module included at one price. The catch is that the vendor does not publish that price, so a quotation is still required, and third party estimates from ITQlick put the range at 1,700 to 2,200 dollars per user per year as an estimate only. The vendor states support for a wide standards set including ISO 9001, ISO 13485, AS9100 and IATF 16949, and describes the product as pre validated at no extra cost.
Choose this instead if you are a small or mid sized manufacturer who wants to test real workflows before signing anything. Desk research total: 8.5 out of 10, the highest on this page. The QT9 QMS review sets out the evidence behind that score.
TrackWise Digital: the legacy migration path
TrackWise Digital, from Honeywell, is the cloud successor in a product family many life science quality teams already know from its on premise heritage. Nine modules are evidenced, with calibration not confirmed for the Digital suite. Only FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and EU GMP Annex 11 were evidenced as named standards in our check, a narrower evidenced list than its rivals, and pricing is not published. A SelectHub listing estimates 200 dollars per user per month, labelled as a third party estimate.
Choose this instead if your organisation carries years of TrackWise history, data and procedures and wants continuity into the cloud rather than a fresh start. Desk research total: 7.4 out of 10. See the TrackWise Digital review for the heritage caveats.
Comparison table
Scores below are desk research totals based on published evidence, never hands on testing, using the method on how we evaluate QMS software. Teams in drug manufacturing should also check the best QMS software for pharmaceutical companies shortlist, because validation expectations narrow the field quickly.
| Platform | Best for | Pricing evidence | Desk research total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Reliance | Configurable enterprise manufacturing | Not published, quote required | 7.8 |
| Veeva Vault Quality | Veeva centred pharma enterprises | Not published, quote required | 8.0 |
| ComplianceQuest | Salesforce centred organisations | Not published, quote required | 8.2 |
| Intellect | No code configurability | Not published by vendor | 8.1 |
| QT9 QMS | Manufacturers wanting a free trial | Not published, quote required | 8.5 |
| TrackWise Digital | TrackWise heritage moving to cloud | Not published, quote required | 7.4 |
Evidence note: ratings and product facts were checked on 21 October 2026 against the G2 sources listed below, including MasterControl at 4.3 out of 5 from 528 G2 reviews and Octave Reliance at 4.3 out of 5 from 624 G2 reviews.
Practical question
Which of the three triggers named above, cost, weight or evaluation friction, actually pushed you to look elsewhere? Pick the alternative that answers that specific trigger, because swapping one opaque enterprise quotation for another changes the logo on the contract, not the problem underneath it.
